What is a general dentist? A general dentist earns either a DDS or DMD degree before becoming licensed to practice. This education includes learning about a wide array of oral health diagnoses and treatments for both children and adults.
Despite our teeth being very strong, they are still susceptible to damage such as cavities, cracks, or chips. In cases where the damage is too severe for a filling to adequately repair, our dentists will frequently suggest a dental crown. If your child is experiencing dental pain, it may be due to food stuck between the teeth or a cavity. To address a toothache, start by flossing between your child’s teeth and rinsing their mouth with water to remove any debris. Should the pain continue, a visit to the dentist is necessary.
As a parent, you want to make sure your children have good nutrition, proper exercise, and excellent overall health. You may have heard that the mouth is a portal to the body, and this is true. What’s in the mouth will enter the body, so daily oral hygiene is important for removing bad bacteria and plaque. When a tooth develops a toothache or cavity, it’s important to bring your kiddo in so that the dentist can determine the cause of the issue. We provide gentle dentistry, so if your little one or teen needs dental fillings, rest assured that we’ll make the Kidsperience comfortable, rewarding, and positive.
If your child needs a tooth extraction, don’t worry. Extractions do not have to be traumatic. Parents should keep a positive outlook and use uplifting, encouraging speech when discussing dental visits and procedures with a child. The team at Vital Smiles works diligently to create a wonderful Kidsperience for every child, regardless of their diagnosis and treatment plan. We also use anesthetics and, when warranted, sedation, to maximize the comfort of our young patients.
Even before birth, babies suck on their thumbs and fingers. Sucking is a natural soothing activity for babies. Giving your infant a pacifier provides a quick, soothing solution to fussiness without feeding. And here’s a bonus: Putting a baby to bed with a pacifier may even reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by half!
At about six months, a baby begins teething. This come-and-go process ends with the emergence of an adorable white tooth. Getting to that result can be difficult, frustrating, and sleepless for both the baby and their caregivers. Our team is here to offer advice and tips, as well as support and encouragement. Rest assured; teething doesn’t last forever. Around age three, a child has all 20 primary teeth.
Every six months, kids over the age of three to five need a professional dental cleaning. These preventive dental care appointments allow us to remove tartar that isn’t washed away during daily brushing and flossing. Regular dental cleanings help deter cavities and gum disease. We’ll also evaluate your child’s gums and track changes over time.
At home, your child should brush twice a day and floss at least one time each day to ensure that no trapped food is allowed to sit between teeth to cause decay and/or bad breath. The best time to floss is before bedtime teeth brushing. We’re here to teach you easy, proper flossing techniques so that you can floss your kiddo’s teeth well. Later, when your child can floss independently, you can provide good instruction. (Your own flossing may become more effective, to boot!)
We love our athletic patients and want to help you protect their mouths, braces, and teeth from injury during play. An athletic mouthguard does just that! Anyone who participates in sports needs to invest in a mouthguard to keep their smile safe.
Back teeth, or molars, are susceptible to developing cavities because they’re difficult to brush and floss, especially for children. Cavities in molars may go undetected until a dental exam unless they cause a toothache. This is another reason parents need to bring their children in for six-month exams and cleanings at Vital Smiles. When we find tooth decay in the early stage, it’s easier, less invasive, and less costly to treat. Early treatment also prevents more serious dental issues from developing.
